History Perry Drilling Limited was initially started in 1980 with the use of a relatively large auger rig. It was originally designed and purchased for the use of drilling soak holes, pre pilling holes and lift shafts. It had the capability to auger holes to a depth of 11m and range in diameter from 200mm to 1200mm. This rig was also accompanied by a Hi-Ab four wheel drive truck mounted auger rig that had the capability of being able to extend 12m and drill 11-12m deep augered holes of various diameters, thus complementing the fix mounted rig.

Perry Drilling's first introduction into the geotechnical field was with the first truck mounted rig drilling sampling holes with a 200mm diameter auger in new subdivisions throughout Tauranga. It progressed into drilling holes for soakage testing while continuing its geotechnical sampling.

Following the soakage testing and geotechnical sampling with the large truck mounted rig it was decided to design and build a light manoeuvrable drill rig on a small tractor to allow access to sites where the larger rig was unable to access. This tractor launched Perry Drilling into the geotechnical testing arena. It could cope with all sorts of terrain and auger to greater depths and now provided the facility to conduct in situ geotechnical testing.

Shortly after the success of the tractor another rig was purchased to complement and extend Perry Drilling's services once again. This rig had a greater capacity and the ability to provide various types of drilling techniques. The rig was an Edson 300 which was designed on a stand alone platform that could be easily attached to any mode of transport. The Edson was attached to a small light weight four wheel drive truck. This rig was also purchased with a complete drilling, sampling and monitoring well installation system know as Hollow Stem Augers. This allowed Perry Drilling to expand into greater depth geotechnical investigations and also complete a large number of environmental and contaminated site investigations throughout New Zealand . The rig was small enough to manoeuvre around restricted fuel station sites and industrial sites. It was accompanied with its own support vehicle and decontamination wash bay for the drilling equipment. This rig has now been moved onto a Morooka rubber track mounted crawler giving it even greater potential to access all types of terrain and site locations.

During this busy period of business expansion, Terrence once again showed Perry Drilling's commitment to the geotechnical and environmental field by researching and sourcing a Cone Pentrometer Testing (CPT) rig to compliment the services Perry Drilling already provided. The CPT was sourced from Geomil Equipment in 1998 and with Terrence's guidance a new design and layout for a crawler rig was developed. It has been operating throughout both the North and South Islands in a wide variety of conditions, locations and tasks.

Once again it was time for Perry Drilling to expand and provide another rig to enhance our already capable staff and drill rigs. Another small tractor mounted rig was developed and built to meet the demands of the projects ahead. It is compact and small enough to be able to fit onto most redeveloping section sites and be craned over existing houses and structures if necessary. Even though it has this capability it is able to drill and sample to considerable depths.

Following the success of the first Edson another was purchased shortly after the completion of the tractor rig. The second Edson is virtually a direct copy of the first with a little more horse power and a few technical advances it provided a great compliment to the already existing drill rigs.

All the rigs have there own transporters and support vehicles to make them highly equipped mobile units with the ability to move location or sites with very little hassle and without the necessity or delay of waiting for outside contractors to transport them.

As Perry Drilling continues to strive to provide excellent customer service and relationships with clients we will continue to expand and develop our rigs and equipment to meet there needs. |
